Toyota Repair: Stuck atuomatic gear shift, toyota corolla wagon, brake light switch

Question
I have a 1990 Toyota Corolla Wagon.  I could not get the car to get out of park.  I had to pump the brakes until the brakes were hard and then start the car and then the car would let me shift into drive or reverse.  Also, when I pumped the brakes, I could hear air coming from there.  Do you know what could be causing this?  What needs to be fixed and how much?

Answer
I'm not sure if there is a problem with the brakes or it's an electrical problem. The shift interlock solenoid will not release and let you shift into any gear unless the brake light switch is in the on position and the brake lights are on, verify that the brake lights are working, if not replace the brake light switch located uder the dash on a bracket near the brake pedal control arm. Have the car checked for a possible problem with the power brake booster or the master cylinder.
