Toyota Repair: drive axle, 2 nuts, neck of the woods

Question
1995 Camry, LE, 4-cyl, 180,000 miles, 1 owner. The boot on the left side at the wheel is cracked completely around and the grease has apparently leaked out. Can the boot be replaced or does the entire assy have to be replaced and is this a do-it-yourself project? I am good mechanically but don't have any type of lift. Thanks.

Answer
If it's not making a clicking noise when you turn and no dirt, washing it out is not a good thing the Toyota kit here is under 50.00, but Toyota has a deal on the reman axle and labor, call to find out how much in your neck of the woods, or Carquest has them (LLTW) for a 100.00 or less, take the old one with you, here the core cost more than the axle, Jack the side up, parking brake on, wheels blocked good JACKSTAND(it will only fall on you once best if you have it on concrete)after you get the wheel off coter key in axle nut, axle nut this is about 187ftlbs, you can get a nice breaker bar at advance fo 20.00 36inch 1/2, 30mm socket 6 point, a good back(I use air at work but have done one at my home like this) a helper, a good pry bar, 14 mm socket for the 1 bolt 2 nuts under the lower ball joint arm get them out pry it down( if you have abs watch the sensor wire 180.00 or more if you break it, I take the bracket loose 2 10mm to put slack in it getting the axle out can be a    when in the air on lift, on your back can be a super    I push it in then take the 100.00 snap-on prybar and snap it out, some times they come on the 1st time or the 30th time, if you can boot it and have the special band pliers you can take the band off of the inner one leaving the housing in the trany.  More then liky after reading this if you have 300.00 you can spare it would be well worth it, but if you go for it let me know.  Oh, if you use Carquest, you get,(pay the refundable core charge) it take over to whos going to do it, the price goes up if they get it for you by 150% markup, make sure you get the right one, holding a rack up can cost you, most of us work on commission.
