Toyota Repair: Cooling System, air control valve, toyota camry

Question
Hello Ted,
I have a 1994 Toyota Camry LE Coupe 4 cyl. auto. Recently, I have noticed if I run a lot of short trips, the temp increases to a little above normal operating level. When this occurs, I will attempt to start the car. It will turn over then immediately shut off. I can keep it running if I start the car and quickly apply the accelerator to increase the RPMs. By keeping the RPMs just slightly above idle, I am able to put the car in drive and once in motion, it will stay running. Any ideas what would cause this? I have had a cooling system flush performed on the vehicle with no success. It has 103k miles. Thank you for your help. Matt Ogle

Answer
The two problems are not related.
It may be running hotter than normal because of a failing thermostat, the radiator could be partially clogged, the cooling fans may not be coming on.
The idle problem is related to the idle air control valve located on the throttle body, it can be removed and cleaned to fix the idle problem.
