Toyota Repair: ignition timing, toyota 4runner sr5, crankshaft pulley

Question
I replaced the water pump on my 94 toyota 4runner SR5 3L V6 automatic transmission 105K miles. Unfortunitely there was slack on the timing belt before I marked the crank shaft timing and cam positions.  After reassembling the engine would not start.  How do I resync the ignition timing with the proper crank, cam and valve positions?

Answer
Hello Bob, welcome to my expert page.
Remove the upper timing cover, rotate the engine until the crankshaft pulley is at the top dead center mark, loosen the timing belt tensioner, pull the belt off the cam pulleys, rotate both pulleys until the dowel pins behind the cam bolts point up, line up the notches of both gears with the notch marks on the metal plate, put the timing belt back on, make sure there is no slack on the right side with the pulleys lined up, release the tensioner to remove the slack on the ledt side, rotate the engine a few times and recheck everything.
