I have a 1987 4 runner and the problem is that there is some kind of liquid which i believe is oil that is coming out of the exhaust.  Can you give me a reason for this or some advice on what i can check.  Your help would be greatly appreciated.  THANK YOU

Hello Ryan, welcome to my expert page.
It would be very unusual for oil in liquid form to exit the tailpipe, in order for oil to get there it has to pass through the cylinders by way of worn rings etc.,normally it is burned and shows up as blue smoke from the tailpipe.
On the other hand coolant can leak into the exhaust system via a blown head gasket, this is indicated by a white gray steam(smoke), it is, again, not common to have a liquid from the exhaust pipe unless the head gasket is leaking so severely that coolant passes through and will exit the pipe, you may want to have it checked for a possible blown head gasket.
By the way, how does the engine run, does it run normal or is there a driveability problem, let me know and I may be able to help you figure this one out.

The engine runs smooth but the TDC always seems to move out of range whenever i adjust it.  What harm can be done to the engine if the motor is running with the TDC off.

Answer
If the engine timing is off, either retarded or toomuch advanced in can cause problems, too far retarded and there is a loss of power, too much advance will cause engine pinging and that's not good either. The causes for not being able to set the timing may be a bad throttle position sensor or possibly a worn timing chain, make sure that you put a jumper wire into the diagnostic connector between terminals TE1 and E1.
