Toyota Repair: tercel no start, virtual nightmare, canadian model

Question
We have a 1990 tercel 1.5 canadian model, the problem is no start. So far we have checked that there is spark, the timing is aligned correctly, the compression test was good about 125 each, and it is getting fuel. When we first looked at it the car was flooded, we replaced the spark plugs, dried out the cylinders, and changed the oil. When we tried to start it it would not fire and within a very short time the car was flooded again. It seems to be getting too much fuel, but what confuses us is that the car will not even try to fire, or backfire? We have checked the fuses and are assuming the carb, control module, or a sensor. Unfortunately over the counter repair manuals just don't have the info for a proper diagnostics. We have spark, compression, and fuel, and can't understand why it won't attempt to start. Any tips would help.

Answer
Hello Darlene, welcome to my expert page,
This is a tough question to answer, these carburetors were a virtual nightmare to try to repair and I think this is where the problem is, the factory recommended way back not to try to repair these carburetors just replace them, there are no parts available from the dealer anymore anyway. I suggest that you try to find a carburetor shop that sells these carbs on a rebuilt basis ot try to find a used one, sorry, that's all the help I can be and good luck with this.
