Tractor Repair: 8 N ford pto, pto shaft, tranmission

Question
QUESTION: My 1949 gasoline powered tractor will not shift into the engaged mode.
I was bush hogging and while still in motion I shifted the pto out of gear. The tractor has a shaft clutch installed onto the outdrive ptoshaft. The shifter felt" funny" when it came out of gear and now the shifter will not move but a 1/2 inch or so instead of the 3 3 inch of travel that I normally have

We have the seat and gearbox cover off and nothing looks out of place. We have tried placing the tranmission in gear and rocking the tractor to and fro to no avail. I have hand rotated the shaft while trying to move the pto shifter and no luck.

Can you please offer any advice.

Thank you,

ANSWER: It sounds like either the lever has become misaligned or the gears are.
This is pretty common with older tractors.
It might help to drain all the hyd. oil out to be able to see down into the tractor.
Let me know what you find out and we will go from there.
Sorry it has taken so long to answer.

QUESTION: I'm in that process now. I can't see the pto shift rail because the top shaft to the rear end gear is blocking the view.
Can I remove the entire hydraulic
pump from the bottom of the tractor and see the pto shaft an linkage?

Thanks,

Answer
I can't remember because these tractors differed depending on what year they were made.
Some models you have to remove the pto shaft to remove the pump. The shaft actually runs through the pump.
If not, then yeah you can remove the pump to get a better view.
You can also remove the shaft and then the pump to look.
Does the 3pt work?
These tractors are pretty simple to work on.
Just pay attention when disassemble it and you shouldn't have any problem.
Let me know how it goes.
