Tractor Repair: farmall 706 diesel, sprag clutch, clutch pack

Question
QUESTION: looking at a 706d to purchase told that the "TA" if pulling a heavy load should not be used or slipping will occur, but everything works fine without TA engaged....should i be concerned, and not get involved with this machine (my understanding is it's a big and expensive job..

ANSWER: Hello,

Yes, it's a big expensive job to replace a TA.  If it pulls OK in one TA speed but not the other, at least it's still a useful tractor as is, and if the price is right, go for it.  If the TA slips in both speeds, then it would not be useful until repaired so if you don't want to spend the money to fix it right away, then don't buy it.  If it slips in both speeds, it could also be the clutch which would be a cheaper easier fix than a TA.

QUESTION: thank you for the response, but just one thing if the slipping is only when TA lever is forward (engaged) with a heavy load. if i never use it in that level could the lower end be effected later on.Or are they not related in that sense,(just trying to fully understand)......Now on another note at present i have an inter 434 GAS, that has been stalling, last summer it stalled during hay season, but would start right back up, run for 15 min and stall again checked it over, nothing found,it's was fine all the beginning of the winter blowing the driveway a dozen times (1/4 mile long)and then last week started stalling again, but it stalls if i'm just driving or driving and blowing, not really forcing with it we haven't any large dumps of snow. but right after it stalls turn the key twice and she starts right back up run for 15 min a nd stall again. took it out yesterday and didn't stall once. Greatly appreciate any help on both questions. Dan

Answer
Hello,

With the TA lever forward in hi, there is a hydraulically applied clutch pack that locks up with oil pressure.  With the lever back in low, the oil is shut off to the high clutch and a mechanical sprag clutch (which overruns like a one way ratchet when the TA is in high) takes over and drives it in low.  If the TA would only slip when in low, the sprag clutch has failed.  If the hydraulic clutch slips when the TA is in high, you should feel the tractor slow down like it is downshifting back to low, and as long as the sprag clutch is good, it should still pull but you would be moving the same speed as in low.  The only way it would stop moving in high is if both the sprag and the hydraulic clutches in the TA are bad.  If the main clutch slips, it would stop moving in both high and low.  If only one TA clutch is bad, you could still use it without doing any damage later on by just using it in the speed that works OK.  If you do have the TA repaired, get a mechanical diode replacement TA which is superior to the original style, and has a 15 year warranty.

On the 434, check the flow of fuel from the tank and make sure you get a full stream and not just a small trickle.  The outlet fitting on the tank likes to plug up with dirt.  Also make sure the tank is venting properly so you don't get a vacuum in the tank as the fuel level drops. If no fuel problems are found, then possibly there is an ignition system problem.
