Tractor Repair: massey 35 gas tractor, spark plug wire, gas tractor

Question
You helped me last year and hope you can now . I was bush hogging and had been fpor over an hour and started to the house and it just died . I tried to crank it , but it would not even try to crank . I cleaned the fuel bowl and took carburetor off and cleaned it . Still no luck . Pulled plugs and cleaned , points , and it tried to crank one little time . It is an old massey 35 from the 60's . Thanks for your help

Answer
Hello,

You will need to find out if it is fuel or ignition related.  Pull a spark plug wire off and hold it near some bare metal on the engine.  Turn the engine over and see if there is any spark.  If not, replace the points and condenser.  If you still can't get spark, then check if there is power to the coil from the ignition switch.  If there is power, then possibly the coil has failed.  If there is spark, then check if there is fuel coming from the tank.  Even though you cleaned out the bowl, there could still be a restriction inside the tank that is not letting the fuel get that far.  With the bowl removed, fuel should run out full stream with the valve turned on.
