Tractor Repair: case 1370, clutch pack, broken shaft

Question
QUESTION: hello my 1370 case doesn't surge to put it in gear so it wont move. The pressures are good and the torque limiter doesnt look bad. But I will replace it anyway. What do think could cause this?

ANSWER: Hello,

I will need a little more info to narrow it down.  Will it grind gears if you try to shift the 4 speed transmission without pressing the clutch pedal down?  If not, there could be a broken shaft.  Do the rest of the hydraulic functions work OK, pto, hitch, steering, remotes?  You say pressures are good, but which ones have you checked?  The pressures for each individual powershift clutch need to be checked at the test ports on the powershift control valve on top of the transmission.    In powershift 1, C1 and C2 should have 200 to 210 psi.  In powershift 2, it's C1 and C3. In powershift 3 it's C2 and C3, and in reverse it's C2 and C4.  There should be no more or no less clutches having pressure than these in each speed.  C2 is the one modulated by the clutch pedal.  Pilot spools in the control valve can stick sometimes, control valve gaskets can blow out, and springs can break on the modulator in the inching spool that is controlled by the pedal.  Also make sure the pedal is moving the inching spool in and out correctly.

QUESTION: hello arnie thanks for the reply
the pto, steering and hydraulics work fine i never tried putting it in gear without the clutch but when we get the torque limiter in we will see what happens and try that. Also I will double check those pressures and that the inching spool is moving correctly
THANKS AGAIN
I have a 1070 case that when it is in powershift 2 the remote hydraulic speeds slow down alot but it only does this in powershift 2

Answer
Hello,

Let me know if you need any more help with the 1370.  On the 1070, there could be a leak in at least one powershift clutch pack, causing it to use up too much of the available oil flow.  There are six bolts that hold the C2 and C3 clutch carriers together and these bolts sometimes break off, allowing the carriers to spread apart slightly and then oil leaks out between them, but this usually is worse in powershift 3.  All the clutches should be pressure tested on that tractor also.
