Tractor Repair: Ford 8n starter drive, ford 8n, bench grinder

after replacing the starter drive with a new one, my son spun the armature by the drive and unloaded the drive. How do I preload it back???

  Hello,

  I have had this happen to me, and I used a bench grinder with a wire wheel to spin the drive fast enough to make it go back in position.  I held the drive against the wire wheel and got it spinning until it finally retracted.  There may be other ways to do it, but that worked for me.  It does have to spin pretty fast before it will go back in.
