Triumph Repair: float chamber plug

Question
QUESTION: How or can the float chamber plug be removed from a Stromberg 175cd carburetor without removing carburetor? This is for a 1974TR6.

ANSWER: Hi Jerry,

The plugs in the bottom are a push in plastic plug and some have a brass cap on them. It can be pried out, but the danger of braking off the ears is high due to it being plastic and when that plastic ages as all of them are now the ears brake off very easily. The carburetors should be removed and the float chambers removed to remove the plugs to have any chance of removing them without destroying them. If you have new replacements in hand then it don't matter, just pry them out.

QUESTION: Howard, what is the best method to pry out the plug and if does break will it leave residue in the float chamber? Thanks, Jerry.

Answer
Hi Jerry,

If you do get the plug out, you will only be able the clean out the plug not the float chamber. Yes, you can still have a lot of trash in the float chamber. Plus you can have a broken plug that can't be put back in.

The carburetors are not that hard to remove so it makes no sense to risk breaking the plug. Then having the rest of the trash in the float chamber work it's way down in to the plug anyway.
