Triumph Repair: Clutch, clutch system, slave cylinder

Question
I have a 1979 Spitfire. When I push in the clutch it goes almost to the floor before it disengages the drive. The fluid level is O.K. I did use brake fluid to top off the reservoir. How can I increase the amount of pedal I have left before the clutch engages?

Answer
Bob,

There are two fairly quick and easy things to try.

First, there might be air in the line.  Bleeding the clutch system may cure the problem.

Second, there is a bit of adjustment on the slave cylinder.  The slave is held into the collar by a pinch bolt.  Loosen the bolt and push the slave forward towards the engine.

If these don't cure the problem then the linkage on either the master or slave may be excessively worn.  Give the bleeding a try and let me know if it's not sufficient.

Cheers,

Jim
