Volkswagen Repair: Problem starting, correct key, vw golf

Question
Hi. I have a 2000 vw golf that was left sitting idle for 3 months. Once I returned home and tried to start it up, it just sputters like its not getting any gas. The battery is charged. The little light that indicates wether or not your using the correct key, just keeps flashing at me. Did the cars computer reset itself after dying? Although this is not the original key, I have used it for months before letting the car sit for 3 months....please help!

Answer
Andrew,
The car is in the "immobilizer" mode.  This happens when a key is not used for a number of months, the car's computer drops it from memory.  Here's a trick I have heard of:
Find a charger and connect it to the battery while installed in the car.  Turn the ignition to ON(not START).  Leave it on for about an hour.  The immobilizer mode should timeout and the computer will reset the key error.
Otherwise you need the SKC code and the dealership has to reprogram the computer for the key.
