Volkswagen Repair: 2001 Cabrio rear pad installation, needle nose pliers, harbor freight tools

Installing new rear pads on my 01 cabrio and having trouble retracting the piston in the caliper. I used a pair of needle nose pliers and turned it clockwise but I can't seem to get it open enough to fit it over the new pads with shims installed. Also I am assuming that I will have to adjust the parking brake cable. Any tips of how to access that under the center console? Thanks for any help you can provide.

There are specific tools that are necessary to properly retract the caliper pistons.  I believe that "Harbor Freight Tools" has the best prices available to the general public, and they have a complete set that will work on smooth, or indented pistons(like the ones in the Cabrio).  If you are able to get this set, the correct adapter is number 6, out of this kit.
Once the pads are completely installed, you can actuate the "emergency brake" levers(on both wheels) to secure, and initially seat the new pads by moving them back, and forth by hand.
DON'T USE a cheap, aftermarket pad.  They will squeal!  Use a Volkswagen replacement pad...I assure you they do not give me a kickback, but there are just a few maintenance items that aftermarket suppliers can't hold a candle to the Volkswagen part.  Other places it doesn't make a difference, but THESE ARE THE BRAKES!  This is the most important system on your car.
There should be no further adjustment of the emergency brake cable necessary.  Good luck, Louis.
