Volkswagen Repair: Replacing tie rod assembly on 2000 VW Golf GL, inner tie rod, golf gl

Question
I need to replace the tie rod assembly (inner and outer) on my 2000 golf GL (gas, automatic, 2dr).   The threaded rod that screws into the outer tie rod was damaged in an accident.  The Chiltons does not have photos or instructions for removing the inner tie rod from the steering rack.  Is there a way to hold the rod protruding from the rack so that when the tie rod is unscrewed it won't foul the rack?  Is there a lock nut on the inner tie rod?  Any help greatly appreciated.

Answer
Hi Mike;
Sorry you had to e-mail this question twice, but there is no lock nut on the inner, it's just in there REAL tight.  Don't use Chilton's.  Use the "Bentley's" book.  They have considerably more information, and they are the only publisher we ever have in our parts department.  If you can't get one at the local book seller, see if there is a copy at the local library to refer to for now.  Then get one for yourself, and throw the Chilton's away.  Or give it to someone you don't like very much.
