Volkswagen Repair: Starter problem, vw golf gti vr6, vw golf gti

I have a 98 VW Golf GTI VR6. I had just stopped at home for a minute, and went back out to start the car, and nothing.  No click, sounds, nothing at all. I had replaces the starter in May of this year, so I had it tested, and it is fine.  Still, nothing.  It was suggested that it could likely be the starter switch. The radio on the way home that day did come on and go off a few times(which is why that was suggested).  Would you agree with it being the starter switch?  If not, what would you suggest?  If so, can you tell me how difficult it is to repair?

I'm not sure if you mean the ignition switch in the steering column or not, but I think that's what you mean.  I would have to say that you will find that switch has a large red conductor that has melted the electrical portion of the ignition switch, and it has to be replaced.  They are not easy to do, even in a shop situation.  If you have no experience removing the air bag in your car, I would take it to the best, most trustworthy local Volkswagen dealer to have the repairs done.  They have the specialized tools necessary to remove the air bag, and to remove the screw, and the rivet that hold the switch together inside the column.  I would call them, and ask them some questions about the technicians that have the necessary electrical certifications to achieve your repair.  I hope this helps Tom.  Good luck.
