Volkswagen Repair: VW 96 Passat Trunk, phillips head screws, release button

Question
Hi,
I have a 96 passat and I cant seem to open the trunk either with the key or with the trunk release button. When I press the key it just does not do anything and neither does the release button. I have had this car for a few years now and the trunk release has been getting worse. I dont know what the problem is. I will really appreciate any pointers. Thanks,

-Aman

Answer
There is an electrical solenoid that pushes the release when the key, or the release button are used.  A faint click, or similar noise should be heard.  If you can tell that there is a noise, but still nothing happens it is the trunk latch itself that is stuck.  So, listen for the click, if no click, then solenoid for sure.  If a click, then latch first, and maybe solenoid too.  Unfortunately, when they get to this age several components may "lose it" at the same time.  If you can get the trunk open, try the key in it and watch.  You'll have to remove the pad/cover, but it is fairly easy.  Screws around the edge, and then clips.  Get the screws out all of the way around, some will be disguised with some "hairy" spray paint, but they are just Phillips head screws.  Once they are all out, you should be able to just pull on the cover, all one direction, STRAIGHT OUT, when the lid is up.  Once this is off try the key, and listen for, and watch for activity from the solenoid.  There is a cable that goes from the solenoid to the latch, so watch that for motion as well.  Good luck, Aman.  Hope this helps.
