Volkswagen Repair: 2000 Jetta alarm, door latch assembly, answering questions

Question
A few days after purchasing this car the alarm started working. Now, I can't turn it off. I put new batteries in the remote, no change. It still doesn't work. Everytime I open the passenger door or start the car the horn sounds for at least 30 seconds (alarm)..how do I bypass or fix this problem...my neighbors are hating me. I do have the manual which mentions using a second key, but I have one on order which won't be in for several days..!!!

Answer
Sorry for the delay Marilyn, my computer broke, and I just got back on-line about 20 minutes ago, and have been answering questions as fast as I can.
If you go to the back of the car, and use your key in the trunk, I think that will shut it off.  The problem isn't with the key, the remote, or the alarm, it is in the drivers door latch assembly/mechanism.  Answer one question for me.  Do the interior, or puddle lights, come on when you open the driver's door?
