Volkswagen Repair: How to drop te gas tank, one peice, gas gauge

Question
I currently have the gas take half way down. I will give you the break down of why in a moment to see if I am doing the right thing. Meanwhile, I have the bottom brackets off but it is caught by the gas filler. The tank and filler are one peice. This is a 1988 Jetta, can you walk me through how to drop it all the way?

Now I am dropping it because, I pulled the gas line from the Gas filter, the side coming from the tank, and turned the key over, pressing the gas and so on, but I only got a little gas (like turning a facet on just past the point where it is drops and turns into a stream. The reason for this is I am not getting gas to the Gas Distribution block, and not it appears not even to the gas filter. I changed the filter, money well spent either way. So I am dropping the tank to change the gas pump, however after the line comes from the pump it goes to a box that is also conected to a gold piece, about the size if a large pill bottle (doesn't look like a pump though) then it continues on to the gas filter and so on to the gas distribution block. What do you think the box and bottle looking gold thing is? It has three lines coming in and out of it and a couple lines go into the box, thats not the pump right, according to the parts house, local Imports parts house the pump is in the tank. Thanks for all the help, sorry this is so ling. I await the chance to fix my only car.

Answer
You have two pumps on your Jetta. One is inside the tank and you can get to it from the trunk. This is the prepump. Take the trunk mat off and there will be a cover with three screws on it. Underneath the cover is the prepump and gas gauge sending unit assembly. The main pump and pump seat is underneath the car on the right side rear. It is in front of the rear axle. You can remove the main pump by detaching the hoses and removing three screws. You don't have to remove the gas tank for either of these procedures. It is a good idea to change both pumps at the same time. They are interelated. I am Max's German Car located at 15020 oxnard st Van Nuys CA 91411.
