Volkswagen Repair: Rear Brake pad replacement, shallow holes, rear brakes

Question
This is for a 99 VW bug with rear discs....How do you depress the piston on the rear brakes to allow replacement of thet pads? We have tried to use channel locks, and a C-clamp and cannot get the piston to move. We did open the master cylinder cap.
Thanks for your help.

Answer
Gary,
I never changed the rear pads on a New Beetle but if they're like other front wheel drive, 4 wheel disc cars, I would think you have to screw the pistons in. If the pistons have shallow holes or other indentations in them, that's a pretty good indication. Snap-On, Mac, Lisle and other tool companies sell the tool to crank them in and I made one out of an old socket. Good Luck!
