Volkswagen Repair: Cold Start Problem, fuel mixture, foot on the gas

Question
Hi Paul:
I realize that your profile does not have you as a VW Quantum expert, but my problem may not be unique.
I have a 1986 VW Quantum...300,000 miles...NY... with an excellent maintanance record... couldn't otherwise have reach 300,000 miles.
Whenever, I try to start the engine, I need at least two tries before the engine would start.

Then, I have to keep my foot on the gas ... sightly depressed... for at least three minutes or else the engine would die.  However, if I go through the same process when the car has been driven for a while, everything works like a charm.  This problem recently started...about 3 months and continues even after a tune up.
I am afraid that this racing of the engine to warm it up will distroy it.

Is there some kind of sensor that's gone bad?
What do you suggest? Thank you!!!

Answer
Earl,

Your car should have a control pressure regulator, located near the ignition disributor.  It's an aluminum part approx. 2"x3" with two fuel lines and an electrical connector.  If it is not working, it won't reduce the pressure above the fuel plunger in the fuel distributor, that allows the engine to run rich during warm up.

Have a mechanic check your fuel mixture, and then fuel pressurers, to determine if you need an adjustment or if the control pressure regulator needs replacing.

Good luck,

Paul
