Volkswagen Repair: 89 Jetta Heater core, heater hoses, heater cores

Question
Does anyone know the last step in removing the heater unit that holds the heater core. I've got the dash off, all the hoses removed and wires everywhere but the main cover wont budge..  Thanks.

Answer
Ahh.... I don't think you had to remove the dash?

Here's a check list of how I do it.

1. Remove the heater hoses (you did that)
2. Remove two nuts under heater hoses.
3. Loosen third nut behind throttle.
4. Remove centre console, shelves under steering wheel and glovebox. Centre air vent, air duct to that vent, and bottom rear duct (screw beside gas peddle and at passenger side.
5. Disconnect three heater cables at heater box.
6. With a long phillips screwdriver remove upper air duct.
7. Remove the clips (6 or 8)splitting the heater box vertically into left and right. There are two tough ones at the back, inserting a flat screwdriver and twisting releases them. Practice on the front ones, that are visible
8. Remove the left half that contains the heater core.

Changing heater cores isn't easy, but there was a recall years ago, and we got it down to less than half an hour... after a lot of practice!  Good Luck!

P.S You might want to put down some towels and a piece of cardboard on the passanger floor to stay dry.
