Volkswagen Repair: water in the drivers compartment VW Golf, lug bolts, phillips head

Question
Dear Ryan, I own a Golf II 87-91 diesel, actually I've 2 problems,
* mostly during winter, i find water in the drivers compartment, below the floor covers, wheher can it come from?
* the front left wheel makes a noise *crack* while the car is stopin, when i press the barke pedal smoothly.

Answer
Most likely the water is coming in through the fresh air intake for the heater.  Its located in the rain tray under the hood on the passenger side.  Most times its the seal around the base of it that fails.  You can remove it and silicone it to fix, or purchase a new seal.  The crack could be many problems, you could have a loose or seized caliper. Also check your disks, there is a small phillips head screw that holds it to the hub, if it falls out the disk can rotate a small amount because the lug bolts are not tight in the disk.
