Volvo Repair: 1988740 turbo, fuel pressure regulator, crank pulley

Question
I recently got a 1988 740 turbo and was told the only thing wrong with the car was the heater core. However I believe more is wrong. It now puts white smoke out that smells like gas and shakes(this is not only when engine cold. The camshaft drivebelt pulley stops spinning when you give it any gas then frees itself and resumes to spin. This is a new problem to me. Does the turbo have anything to do with it?

Answer
Zach, white smoke is usually a head gasket issue but a compression test will determine that.  The gas smell may be an overfueling issue caused by a bad coolant temp sensor or possible fuel pressure regulator.  camshaft drivebelt?  or do you mean the crank pulley?  Power steering? Compressor?  Alternator belt?  You may have been lied to but this is one of the good volvos so spend a few bucks now and you will enjoy the car for a long time.  Roger
