Volvo Repair: temerature sensor trouble 98 v70 awd turbo, coolant level, genuine volvo

Question
car has 153k miles.temperature guage just started to show running hot.ran heater, air hot, probably not thermostat.
engine, rad.hoses not hot like engine overheating.coolant level good.let sit overnight and started.after aprox.3 minuntes, cooling fan came on,temp guage in red, still hoses and engine not hot like overheating.would a temp.sensor cause this? if so where is it located?

Answer
Mike, yes, you could be having a misreading on the gauge.  The temp sensor is on the thermostat housing.  Buy a genuine Volvo Sensor.  Anything else will lead to check engine lights and other faults that you dont want to deal with.  Trust me, we have tried other sensors.  They all suck.  Stick will Volvo Parts on this one.  Roger
