Volvo Repair: exhaust smell coming thru vents when idling, volvo v70 cross country, 1999 volvo v70

Question
Hi
I have a 1999 Volvo v70 Cross Country--2.4L--Turbo. It had a few problems which I put it in the shop for and one was the smell of exhaust coming thru the vents when I have the heater on when the car is idling. The mechanics said that that was a leak in the exhaust so I paid to have the exhaust manifold replaced. I have the car back now and the fumes are still there. I have 5 young children and I also would like to live a long, healthy life. ON top of worrying that the exhaust manifold was replaced for no good reason I am very concerned about this problem. Its cold here in winters in way NOrthern California. Any idea what could be causing this? To save you time, I will let you know that I also had some work done on the oil something or other, so I don't think its leaking oil on the exhaust.

Answer
Mary, I see this alot here in Florida. My question to you is, do you have the recirc function pushed on?  If not, try that first and see if anything changes. If that button is not pushed, air from the outside is coming in the car.  I have never seen an exhaust manifold fail on any Volvo ever.  Was this shop a dealer or Joe Schmoes Garage? Roger
