Volvo Repair: Volvo 850, worth to fix head gsaket?!, volvo 850 turbo wagon, volvo repair

Question
QUESTION: I don't know much about cars, but I sure got attached to my 1996, Volvo 850 Turbo wagon! I only had the car for a couple of months, and put quite some money into it... (new timing belt, new breaks (rotor & pads), axle got sealed, etc...) Well, it seems like the head gasket blew now! As I said, I don't know much about cars... But I was told that it pretty much means that my car is dead! Does that mean it's all trash? next stop junkyard?! Or is there a possibility to fix the problem? And how much would that cost me? If it's a hopeless case – do you suppose I could sell it to a "hobbyist mechanic"? If so, how (and where) could I find somebody? I remember needing a matching rim and paying almost $200 for a used one... The car looks great, everything is in good shape ((except the motor, I guess...).  I just feel like it's a waste to trash this beautiful car... What do you think?!?

QUESTION: Vielen Dank fuer die schnelle Antwort! I didn't take it to the Volvo repair shop... I have been using an independent mechanic since I can't afford the rates at the dealership (except that my mechanic said something about $4000 to even attempt fixing the head gasket...)! I have 147.000 miles on the car. And I'm afraid to fix it for a lot of money and then the next major thing is coming up for repair (like it happened now)! But you are right, any "new" car in my price range will need some work... What to do?! Oh, I live in Connecticut. (And you can answer in german, too!)

Answer
