Volvo Repair: Volvo xc v70 2001 repair, volvo xc, volvo dealer

Question
I am considering purchasing a 2001 XC V70.  My concern is it has 87,000 miles and I have been told long term reliability is not good...also there are certain repairs only a Volvo dealer can do and there isn't a dealer within 80 miles of me.  Any truth to this and what do you think my odds are on this car.  One owner clean carfax by the way.
Thankyou   Vicki

Answer
The only long term issues those cars have is if the previous owner was lazy with oil changes.  That is the number one cause of major engine/mechanical problems.  Other than that, they have just as many problems as ANY car I have ever worked on.  It is true though that some repairs can only be performed by the dealer, because only a dealer diagnostic computer can read the on-board computer.  Be ready to go to the dealer at least a few times in the life of the car.  If you can do that then it should be fairly reliable for you.
