Volvo Repair: Is it time to move on???, s70 glt, wheel bearing

Question
Hello Sir,

I currently drive a 1999 S70 GLT with 195k.  The car has been absolutely great for me but I am would appreciate any help you can offer on diagnosing a few recent problems:

1) The LCD display in the dash cluster will occasionally light all the indiciators and the word DISC will appear.

2) When I first start the car and begin to move (either forward or reverse) there is a rumbling sound coming from the engine compartment (very brief, always less than 30 seconds so diagnosing it has been a bear).  It sounds just like a previous issue I had on another car when the belt tesnioner went bad (originates in that area of the engine as well).  I had the belt tenioner replaced within the last 10k miles and I have been able to hear the sound (twice) while watching the tensioner and it seemed to be doing its job just fine. (no big movement).

In your opinion am I approaching the point where it may be time to move on to another car?  I've been averaging about $3k in repairs each year which really doesn't bother me too much as it beats a car payment.  The issue I am having is that about 6,000 miles ago I had the water pump, coil packs, and some other work done that came to about $2.5k.  I am just worried that some big issues may be lurking around corner. I have never owned a Volvo before so I don't know what to expect.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Answer
Mike, you actually have one of the more decent Volvos.  98 is betterbut the 99 isnt too bad.  The noise almost sounds like a wheel bearing but its impossible for me to diagnose without hearing it.  The DISC is a common thing that normally goes away.  I dont think you want to spend the money to replace that unit.  3k a year isnt too bad a year but Im wondering why did they replace all the coil packs?  Usually only one goes bad at a time.  Normal maintenance is a must and these cars are great but have their quirks.  I would hold on to it and if you do buy another Volvo, stay away from any year of the S80.  Utter garbage.  Roger
