Volvo Repair: Odometer quit working, radiator replacements, trip odometer

Question
I would say my repair skills are average... I have done brake jobs, alternator & radiator replacements, timing chains, several stereo installations all on various cars so I believe that I could handle the gear replacement. My primary concern is knowing where all of the torx screws are hidden and knowing if I have to remove the entire dash panel or is there a way to just remove the section of the dash where the odometer/speedometer is located. Do you have any links to illustrated parts catalogs that may give that type of information or is it something that can be explained in a written description?
Thanks, Kurt

Hey Roger, I have a 1996 850 GLT 4 door with 87k miles on it. The other day I pressed the trip odometer reset button before a road trip and both the trip odometer and regular odometer have quit working. The speedometer still works. I pushed and pulled on the trip reset button several times during the trip but no luck. Any ideas? Is accessing the odometer unit difficult? Thanks, Kurt

Kurt, you broke the gear.  Never press the button while the car is moving.  Not sure if you did that but just thought I would type that in.  They arent bad but not knowing your mechanical skills, I would leave it to a Volvo Shop or dealer.  Roger

Answer
Kurt, I dont have that info but its pretty easy.  Remove the center vents and driver vent.  Remove the torxes that are up towards the dashpad.  Remove the 2 torxes that are around the shroud where the cluster is.  Remove the drivers speaker cover. push the center of the tabs down.  Pull the grommets out.   Remove Speaker.  Open driver door.  Remove small grommet from side panel and remover torx that is behind that.  Now pull that piece towards you.  Now remove the other torx screw.  This is only half of the pad, you dont need to pull the whole thing out.  If you want to then do the rest of the vents etc.  You will have to disconnect the pass airbag though so you would have to remove the glove box inner.  Carefully pull the pad towards you so that you can get it up and over the dash.  Now the green connectors on the cluster have to come out.  Be careful.  Yours may have a connector at the bottom of the cluster. After you get the cluster out is the fun part.  Study it and see if you want to tackle it. We can go further if you need my help.  Roger
