Volvo Repair: engine dies when taken out of gear, volvo 1989, volvo service

Question
Volvo 1989 240DL sedan w/over 200,000 miles tends to idle rough and now die when taken out of gear, when I want to put it in P at RR Xing, or to stand momentarily to mail a letter in a curbside box, and save the brakes thereby. It's been getting worse for a while - the "irregular heartbeat" - but yesterday and today the engine died quickly when I put it in P. This doesn't happen from a cold start. Engine speed feels/sounds normal when in gear. Car has been well maintained; owned by an elderly disabled relative who can no longer drive; due to external factors there's not a huge amount of $$ available, though car is necessary. What are likely culprits for this problem?

Answer
Greetings,
I would have the car looked at and consider having a tune-up...if needed..it is too difficult to pinpoint any exact reason as to why your 89 240 runs poorly.
Find a small repair shop that specializes in Volvo...or visit your Volvo service dept. and find out exactly what your car needs...the problem comes in when you have repairmen who don't know what their looking for replacing your expensive auto parts and
the problem is still there...often this happens...so,have a competant repairperson look at your Volvo.
               Good luck,
