Volvo Repair: 93 850 GLT Rough Idle and stalling, auto recyclers, volvo service

Question
Hi my name is Rene and I drive a 1993 850. A couple of months ago I noticed that my idle was funny, it would go up and then down, up and then down and then it would almost stall. It wasn't smooth like when a car is freshly started. I thought maybe I just needed my idle adjusted. Recently it began stalling whenever I would slow down to stop. It ran great when excellerating but as soon as I started slowing the lights popped on and it would stall. It would start right back up. Last week it stalled again but this time refused to restart and left me stranded. I walked home on probably the coldest night of the year and came back the next day and it started right up! When I turn it on now it will idle for a bit then get rough and finally stall. Now it stalls evertime I have to stop. Help would be greatly appreciated.

Answer
Hi Rene,
Many problems can cause the symptoms you describe..You will have to get a accurate evalualion of your engine idling problem..guessing at your problem is just that..guessing.You must get ACCURATE assessment of your needs...or you will pay someone (MAYBE) hundreds of dollars to fix it and not really get to the problem.
"LET'S TRY THIS AND SEE WHAT HAPPENS"Very few parts are refundable...if it's the wrong guess.
Sorry to give you this lecture...I have seen many repair bills that cost the owners over 1 thousand and still have the problem.
Visit your friendly Volvo service dept. and get an evaluation..You can weigh your options...sometimes used parts are available at auto recyclers..if you know someone who has above average mechanical skills..often the actual problem involves a simple parts replacement..giving you the option to have the job done outside the dealer..Yes their bill can be very high too....but you can save heaps of moola if you have the actual repair done by the guy/woman who has mechanical skills...I really encourage car owners to get choices..also to buy parts at substantial savings from a internet source...$600 componants can be had for $200--350.
So Rene, you may drive into the Volvo service dept.and bite the bullet and have it done there...or get involved and save heaps of $$$.
You may contact me at my email address...after you have an assessment from the dealer..I may be able to find the part for you.
Actually, the BEST deal is to find a private small repair shop that specializes in Volvos...like me.
         Good luck,
