Volvo Repair: alternator, battery cables, serp belt

Question
1996 Volvo 850 2.4L model, One day, all the warning lights illuminated on the dashboard, and battery died two days later. Replaced battery, but dash warning lights (all of 'em) still illuminated. Did voltage test on battery, but still wasn't holding a charge. Went to take out alternator, but gave up due how deep it is buried. When I put the serp belt back on and started the car, all dash lights off, and battery WAS taking a charge from the alternator (14 volts, no load). Drove for two days now, dash lights are back on and battery is not taking a charge (11.5 volts, no load). Could this be as simple as a loose wire somewhere? All battery cables are in good shape. Thank you.

Answer
Hi Eric,
      Loose wire or poor connection..maybe.
I'd look at brushes in Alt.I'm unsure if that model has easily replacable brush pak.
Check connections at battery.Make sure all is clean.
       A very happy alt.puts out 14.5.
With engine off, rap the alt...be sure NOT to expose yourself to any possible risk of injury...use longer metal rod(long 1/2in.drive extention)to tap on alt.If alt. starts to put out you need brushes.
Often brushes wear out on alts.
        Good luck,
