Volvo Repair: 1990 740 no start, gallon jug, fuel pump relay

Question
Hi mr. Great...i just replaced the head gasket on my 1990 740 wagon. That went smooth, until i tried to start it. here is what is happening, there is spark,im not sure if it is yellow or blue i will check that. there the fuel pump relay clicks when i turn the key but the pumps do not come on. i took the relay out and jump it by inserting a wire in #30 and 87 (the middle connector no sure of # ) the main pump started up but the in tank did not. the main pump came on before i turned the key. i thought it wasnt suppose to come on till i turned the key? i pulled # 1 fuse for main pump and turned the key the in tank pump did not come on. i chjecked the fuse ( #11) and there is no juice at all to this fuse. i beleave it should still start even if the intank pump is not working. i checked the radio suppresoir relay it works at least it clicks when the key is turned on.i have not pulled the flywheel sensor yet but i will when i start on the car this morning. also i dont think gas is getting up past the injectors. the engine turns over fine but there is no inkling that it wants to start, like there is no spatrk or no gas.Im stumbed.i got to get this car runnig so i can sell it and have rent money by the beginning of jan. (my problem not yours, had to vent a little)also the car has been sitting for 6 or 7 months since the head gasket originally blew.your insight is gratly appreciated. thanks david

Answer
Hi David,
I don't know where to start....to check if fuel is making it to injectors...loosen fuel feed to fuel inj. rail....add rubber hose...put one end in a gallon jug....put other end on fuel feed.....in 30 seconds you should have a 1/2 full jug....plus or minus a little..you may be able to get pumps to go thru using fuses....or by tricking the f/p relay.
Make CERTAIN that engine/head and distrib. are aligned and are set to proper settings.
Spark....You are just going to have to go thru the systems to be sure they are working....most of the componants are difficult to know if they have failed..unless you have a back-up part to test.
I wish I could be better help...find out if car ran well before head gasket failed....might be good idea to check compression in all 4...just to know.

              Good luck,
