Volvo Repair: 1988 240 DL Wagon trouble starting, windshield wipers, dashboard lights

Question
Hi,

I never had this problem before, but the other day after running a few errands in the car (during a rainstorm), it wouldn't start after the last stop I made. There wasn't any cranking or anything (the dashboard lights came on after a few seconds, but weren't on originally), it was as if the battery was dead. Also, I couldn't swear to it, but even though the radio was off, it looked like it was on "on" and there were a bunch of "000000" where the station call letters would be, but like I said, it might have been the sun playing tricks on me. Next, I tried the windshield wipers, but they were working really slow, and then stopped all together after a few seconds. I pressed on the gas, and it started (again without the engine cranking, it just started), and the wipers worked normally. This went on for a few days (although in the morning the car would start right upwithout any problems)until I was able to get it to a mechanic. I explained the problem, and he turned it on and off about ten times while I was there, and it started up each time. I left the car with him, and later he said he checked all the connections (spark plugs etc.) and battery, but they all gave the indication that the car was charging alright (I had had a tune-up a few months ago with new wires and distributor cap, and the battery is new). Later after I picked the car up he told me that it was working fine, and the only thing that he could think of was the igntion switch might be going and suggested I change it. Since then, however, I haven't had a any trouble with it. Could it have been the rain on the initial day the problem started that caused it to happen? When I told him that every time the problem occurred and I stepped on the gas and turned the key it started, the mechanic told me that was a coincidence, that it wasn't a fuel related problem, it was more or less electrical. Since I count on the car to take me too and from work etc. it would make me feel a lot better if I knew what the problem was so I could get it taken care of. Although, like I've said, it's working fine now. Should I just leave well enough alone? If you can offer any suggestions I'd really appreciate it. Thank you in advance for your help.

Sincerely,
Jim Klossek

Answer
it sounds more electrical.it sounds like you have changed most of the parts that would cause this type problem.without the problem happening it is hard to fix.I would see how it goes if there continues to be a problem I would have it looked at again.sorry there are no easy answers.
