Volvo Repair: BRAKE LIGHTS NOT WORKING PROPERLY, rear fog lights, dash light

Question
HI!  I HAVE A 87 240DL AND THE BRAKE LIGHTS ARE NOT WORKING PROPERLY.  THE DRIVER SIDE BRAKE LIGHTS COMES ON WHEN YOU STEP ON THE BRAKE.  THE PASSENGER SIDE LIGHT STAYS BRIGHTLY LIT AS IF THE BRAKE WERE ON AND DOES NOT CHANGE EVEN WHEN YOU STEP ON THE BRAKE.  THE WINDOW BRAKE LIGHT IS ON WHILE DRIVING BUT TURNS OFF WHEN YOU STEP ON THE BRAKE. DO YOU KNOW WHAT IS CAUSING THIS AND HOW TO FIX IT?
THANKS!!!

Answer
Those older cars used the rear fog lights (looks like stop lights) as an indicator that a bulb was burned out.  That also is the reason the dash light is there.  Applying the brake will make it go out though.  Check for burned out bulbs and your problem should be found.  If not let me know what else you may find and i'll help you troubleshoot a shorted wire.  Hope this helps.
