Volvo Repair: m-46 tranny and OD, proper linkage, metal shavings

Question
I have a 1982 240 DL that has a M46 tranny.  I've recently
acquired this car.  All the maintenance requirements have
been neglected.  I've fixed most of the leaks, belts, hoses,
mounts, etc. and the car has hope.

Here's my problem:
While replacing the rear seal and clutch I just happened to
notice that there was hardly any tranny fluid in the
gearbox.  What was left was grimy but no metal shavings.  I
filled it back up with 10w-40, inspected for leaks and
located a major leak where the
overdrive bolts onto the tranny. I noticed there was no
gasket there and don't know if it should even have one.

My question is:  Now that I
have the tranny already out of the vehicle, how can I
remove the overdrive from the tranny?  I attempted to do so
but can't get OD splines to unbind from the trans output
shaft.  The OD pulled out about a half inch but that's it.  It's
turned into a big mess! I even took off the top to
the tranny where the shifter linkage goes into to inspect the
gears(out of curiosity). But, I barely got the cover back on
with proper linkage and now I can't get the overdrive bolts
tight without causing the tranny gears to lock up.  Please
help!?  I have a lot of experience working with cars but
never dealt with transmissions.  I just want to fix this leak
and get the tranny back together.

The condition of the tranny looks ok but the overdrive
never worked.  None of the wires to the solenoid are
attached or whole and I can't tell what goes where.  The
button on the shifter has also desinegrated.

Answer
the best thing may be to stop by the local dealer if it is near by and see if someone can assist in getting it unstuck.I have never rebuild one with the overdirive unit so I am not too familiar with it.and if I did have one off it was many years ago I would really neeed to see it.
