Volvo Repair: rough idle and hard starts, distributer cap, windshield wipers

Question
I sprayed all the injectors and the fuel distributor where the lines led to (i think thats the right name for the part) and I thought I heard the idle get a little faster but not for long and not very much on a couple injectors and on one of the lines in the distributor.  I wouldn't say it went very high though, it could have even just been the car's odd idle.

Could the injectors themselves be causing this?  This whole problem started so suddenly about a month ago when I got into my car and tried to start it and before this it had NEVER given me any trouble... The engine turned over started well and then it sounded like an intake backfire and the car died and it's been doing this ever since.  I took it to a mechanic and he said I needed a new air-fuel control unit but then found the problem with it and fixed it.  He put a bolt in one of the holes he didn't think was suppose to be there?  Any other ideas?  Thanks so so much for your time.

I have a 1979 245 Fuel injected B21F engine.  Recently I've been having trouble with the idle, the car will die while stopped at a light or just simply not start in the morning.  I can adjust the idle speed to prevent it from dying but then the engine is always racing and it's just a coverup to a larger problem.  A perfect example was this morning.  I went to the car, it started immediatly idled well then suddenly idled very rough and died. If the car won't start I can use starting fluid in the air intake and it will start every time.  Some times it sounds like the spark plugs rattle though when this is done.  I was also having trouble with the in tank prepump and thought the problems were related but I just replaced the pump and this problem persists (it solved my other problem though!).  So far I've replaced spark plugs, distributer cap and rotor, fuel filter, air filter, in tank prepump and... windshield wipers.  I'll be forever in your debt if you can help! thanks!

Sounds like you have a vacuum leak which is leaning out the mixture. Check for leaks at the injectors by spraying some carb cleaner onto the injector area or intake area. If there is a vacuum leak your idle will go very high and then come back down. If there isn't any leaks the idle will not change. I bet the injector seals are the culprit.
If they are, the seals will need to be replaced, two per injector.

Answer
Any amount of increase in idle would indicate an air leak. I would recommend replacing all the injector seals because without repairing these vacuum leaks you wouldn't be able to adjust the air fuel mixture properly.
As far as your backfire is concerned, sounds like a lean backfire which would have probably knocked off  or loosened one of the air hoses to the air slide.
check the u-shaped hoses at the air slide which is mounted to the valve cover on the intake side.
