Volvo Repair: 1996 Volvo 850 transmission problem, coolant line, freeway speeds

Question
Thank you for your timely response. I do have one question about this "PIP". What is its function and how can I test this. Also, we did completely change the ATF. We disconnected the transmission coolant line and pumped the oil fluid out and replaced it with new fluid.

thanks again,

My son was recently given a 1996 Volvo 850 with 230K miles. Looks and runs great. Just started to experience a transmission problem. It shifts erratically when driven in traffic. The check engine light does not show a fault. I changed the transmission fluid because it was discolored and smell somewhat burnt. This improved the shifting somewhat but there still is a shifting problem. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Answer -
There is a bulletin regarding a " pip ". This unit is mounted ecxternally on the transmission at the top under the air cleaner assembly. When this goes out the car's transmission shifting can go kinda haywire, also loss of power. Check to see if records show if this has been replaced.
Transmission fluid also should be flushed, not just drained.

Answer
Sorry, typo, that should be "PNP". I've never gone and checked it's function, just replaced going by symptom.
The car basically fels like its locked up in 3rd gear at all times and has very low power coming off from a stop. Doesn't accelerate right until it gets up to freeway speeds.
This actually should show up as a trouble code thru the diagnostics connector.
