Volvo Repair: 1990 240 DL, flash flash flash, crank sensor

Question
Hello,
I have been chasing a problem for weeks with my 1990 240 DL Volvo. I can get the car to start (sometimes) but after driving it for a long distance (45 min-1 hour or stop and go traffic) and then come to an idle it will bog down and run rough and then quit. It will then take about 30 min. or more to be able to restart the car.

I have already replaced the fuel pump in the tank and under the car. Fuel filter, pressure regulater,Relay, and the power unit modual for the fuel injectors. So far nothing has worked. I know there is fuel pressure at the intake bar as I have checked it just after the problem happens. My last thought is to replace the ECU.

What do you think. I have also thought to replace the crank sensor but have not done that yet.

Thanks
Judd

Answer
I would start by checking for diagnostic trouble codes in the fuel and ignition systems.best would be to check for spark and fuel when it does not start.below is how to check  codes

in the engine bay on the drivers side near the strut tower there is a small black box with a wire attached to it.place the wire in the terminal marked 2.turn ignition key on (not started)press the small button for 1 second and the code will be displayed as a series of flashes.a red led displays the codes.the code will be three digits.small pause in between flashes for a single number long pause between flashes for the next number.example 121 will be flash.....flash..flash.....flash.repeat three times or until first code repeats itself.to erase the code after all codes have been checked hold the button for a good 5 seconds then release the light should light steady, then press for another 5seconds.this will erase the codes.  email me the codes and i will tell you what they are..socket 2is the fuel system 6 is ignition.
