1986 to 1992 (e30) 325e/325i/325is what are the differences between the three. Also which model has the most horsepower below the m3/and what would a m3 motor swap set me back? thank you seth

Answer
Seth,
Actually the cars are VERY similar with only engines as the "main" change between the cars.

The 325e has a 6 cylinder 2.7L engine, it makes 121hp with ~180tq.  It was an engine for fuel economy, as it redlines at 4750rpm.  The rearend is gas friendly as well, as it was an open 2.93:1.

The 325es was pretty much the same car, but usually a coupé, and has a LSD 2.93 differential.  I think some of them had sport suspension as well.

The 325i has a 6 cylinder 2.5L engine that makes 168HP with 168TQ.  It's a little more racy engine with a redline of 6500rpm.  It shares the same engine block as the 325e, but has a shorter stroke crank, higher compression pistons, and a better breathing cylinder head.  These were usually geared with a 3.73:1 LSD differential for a little more accelleration.

The 325is is the same, but with sport suspension, and it is also a coupé.

If you are looking for a good dependable, long-lasting car, either will do, but the 325e(s) will definately be the best for the job.  if you want a sportier version, go with the 325i.  I would recommend a 5speed manual transmission, as any automatic cars are probably in need of a tranny rebuild by this age.

 Hope this helps,
 Josh
