BMW: 1988 BMW 735i Heater bypass, 1988 bmw 735i, bmw 735i

Question
My 1988 735i is leaking coolant from the heater core. My mechanic
says it cannot be bypassed so I do not have to replace the heater. Is
there any way to do this as he wants $800 to replace the heater

Answer
Tim,
I am not familiar with the 7-series like I am with the 3-series.  I dont understand how it CANNOT be bypassed, as there are usually 2 hoses that run through the fire wall, into your heater core.  One hose is for coolant running into the heater core, and the other is the return line.  If you disconnect these lines at the firewall, and connect them together, you are pulling the heater core out of the loop.  I would locate these lines, and see if it can be done.  Unfortunately I cannot tell you exactly how to do this, because I'm not 100% sure how the heater lines run on those cars.
You can check out Bimmerforums.com, and roadfly.com and select the E32 forum (your cars code is E32).

 Hope this helps some,
 Josh
