Buick/Olds: 96 Buick Skylark Idiot lights wont turn off, buick skylark, gm products

Question
Hello sirs,

I was driving home through a very intense rainstorm, and with about a mile to go to my house. I looked down, no lights on that shouldn't have been on, and then I glanced down again, and every light on my console was on as well as a dead engine temp gauge. (i.e Low coolant, check oil, check engine(always on), Theft system, and then seatbelt, oil, battery and airbag, abs and some other oness) Basically, all the idiot lights.  The car continues to run fine. I took it to Auto store, had computer run a diagnostic on it, all they could was fuel/emission system problem.

My mechanic said to try to run it for a week in this condition after the rains let up and then come back to him if they are still always on. Do you have any idea what could cause this problem to occur? I'm preparing to start college and this car is my only transportation. The speedometer works, the odometer works, fuel gauge works, head lights and turn signals all function properly.

Answer
Dave,
Based on 55 years experience with GM products, I'd venture to say, you have on open ground somewhere.
Check your ground cable at the rear of the engine block...( a woven brass cable, attached to the engine block and the frame.) If that's ok, check all the ground wires in the engine compartment, even the horn system.
With GM, when a ground opens up, the lights start playing games...
It is a kind of "built in alert" Honestly, it won't hurt it to drive it that way...the only danger is that you won't be able to know if another idiot light ACTUALLY COMES ON/
