Buick/Olds: Generator Warning Light, buick lesabre, warning light

Question
1978 Buick LeSabre. The generator warning light is usually on. Sometimes it comes on as soon as the engine is started - other times it takes a few minutes before it comes on.

A new battery and alternator have been installed.

When running at idle, the voltage across the battery is 14.5 - 14.7 volts. No indication that the battery is discharging or running down.

37,000 original miles on car.

Any ideas? Might it be the voltage regulator?

Many thanks for any help.

Jim

Answer
No, it is not the voltage regulator. If it was it would not have the correct charging voltage that you have. It could be a bad diode in the alternator, but if it was doing the same thing before you replaced the alternator, I would have to say that it is not the problem. You could have a problem with the printed circuit on the dash cluster causing the light to come on without really having a charging system problem.
