Chevrolet: Camaro will not start, vacuum system, starter fluid

Question
Perhaps you can help, I just finished doing a lot of rebuild work to my 1979 camaro and it will not start. I replaced gaskets for oil pan, fuel pump, intake manifold and valve covers. Rebuilt the carb and replaced the wires, rotor, dist. cap and distribitor including coil. Fuel pump is working fine, have spark and set timing to TDC and number one plug. Replaced battery also. Closest thing I get to a start is some exhaust backfire. Have checked timing, plug wires and vacuum system over and over. Tried starter fluid and got nothing. What am I missing?

Answer
HI  PAT;
       I bet that the distribitor is not in right,or it is 180 off.
Did you replace it right ? you must put it in on the no# 1 plug with the caps no#1 the same as if it is off by only one tooth it will not start. Get back to me if you need help doing so.
