Ford: 98 Windstar - Front End, windstar van, loose boots

Question
-------------------------
The boots look good.  When I lift it and turn the wheel it sounds more like the wheel bearing.  This is a very larg bearing.  Does it have to be pressed on or can a careful hammer do the trick?  What is the size of the nut on the spindle?  What is the torque setting?

Thanks.

Question -
My 98 Windstar van has 129000 miles.  I am hearing a metal grinding sound that turns into a minor whine on the right front as you accelerate.  It is not the brakes as that does not change the sound when you push the brake.  Any ideas?  If its is a CV joint how hard are they to change?

Thanks.

Answer -
Inspect your rotors to see if there is obvious marking to show that it rubbing against backing plate.  If there are no markings then check CV joint for broken or loose boots.

Answer
I think if memory serves me right the spindle nut take a 1 9/16" socket.  If the wheel bearings are hard to take out you difnitely need to replace them.  More than likely I still recommend checking your backing plate for marks or unusually bends or creases.  Your spindles should have a smooth and graduale taper.  If there are grooves where the bearing rides depending on the depth you may also need to replace the spindle.
