Ford: Ford Ranger Headlamps, send e mail, headlamp switch

Question
I have a 1999 Ford Ranger and was attempting to change the headlamps on them. They aren't burned out yet, but they are dimming so this is a preventative maintenance.

When I popped the hood, it appears at first glance that it's impossible to reach the connection without moving a lot of stuff. On the drivers side, the battery is in the way, and on the passenger side, the air filter/housing is in the way. I attempted the passenger side and had to remove the air filter cover and it was still nearly impossible to reach. I ended up cutting my hand pretty good and not being able to get the bulb changed.

My question is, is there an easier way to change these bulbs, or is this the only way (removing the air filter cover/housing and removing the batter)? Thanks!
