GM-GMC: Transmission Compatibility, output shaft, adaptor plate

Would a trans from a 1996 2WD GMC P/U (w/4.3L eng) fit a 1996 4WD GMC P/U (w/5.7L eng)?

NO. is the short answer.

They are both 4L60E tranny's however,the 2wd tranny has a different tailstock on it.  The 4wd tranny has an adaptor plate which bolts to the transfer case.  The majority of the guts are the same, with the exception of the output shaft I think.
