GM-GMC: gmc diesel, crankshaft sensor, gmc diesel

Question
I was wondering if it is possible to put a 2000 6.5 turbo diesel engine into a 1994 2500 gmc pickup that has a blown 6.5 turbo diesel engine in it without having to switch wiring harness or anything else major. They look basically the same but thedashboard and a few little things look different. Thanks

Answer
The swap should go okay.  I put a 2000 year model 6.5 in my 83 G-20, but I kept the injection system mechanical and used the parts from my 1983 6.2 diesel engine in order to do so.

You might find a few sensors different between your 1994 and 2000 year model engines, but not many.  The 2000, if it is a complete engine, will include a dual thermostat water crossover that may interfere with your existing A/C compressor.  It will also require a different top radiator hose.

I would remove the crankshaft sensor and injection pump from the 1994 engine and reinstall them on the 2000 engine.  That should minimize any potential conversion problems.

With the engine out, you may wish to change the glow plugs to the newer, self-limiting, style (or verify that the ones installed are self-limiting).  The latest version is AC-Delco 60G and they can be purchased from AutoZone for $8.00 each.

Best wishes on your engine exchange.
